How can Atlantic Translations help me?

We can help you translate your digital media, such as websites, software, web applications and assist you with multilingual CMS integration. We can also help you translate your analog media, such as brochures, catalogs, labels, product packaging, fliers, documentation for various products, and procedures, such as user manuals and guides, operating manuals and other extensive documents. We an handle anything from translating and formatting the user care instructions for clothing, to specialized technical translation and layout of your 300 page robot instruction manual. We can also help with multicultural marketing, by preparing your design or product to make it compatible with cultural, linguistic, and technical requirements of your international audience.

But what about services like Google Translate or Babelfish?

Machine translation is not always a reliable language resource, since they are limited in addressing the cultural complexities of language. The results produced are often inaccurate and a chore to decode. Although useful in some instances, (such as piecing together the meaning of a news article), as language wizards we highly discourage the use of machine translation for professional use.

Are my files and information safe and secure?

Absolutely! We are very serious about date security and client privacy. Our internal IT infrastructure is fully HEPA/SOX compliant, and we use encrypted transmission protocols whenever possible. Please see our Terms and Privacy Policy for more details. Any information submitted to Atlantic Translations will be held in strictest confidence.

Do I retain legal rights to the translated text?

Many other translation providers try to retain rights to the translated material, then try to charge you extra if you reuse the translated material. If you own complete copyright to the source material you submit to us, then you will also own the translated material once we finish the job. Although, if you did not create the original work being translated and do not have the consent of the author to publish or use it, your new translated version of that work may be unauthorized. What is multilingual desktop publishing (DTP)?

The process of typesetting and producing the layout of translated media, and maintaining all elements of the original works (graphics, pictures, fonts, styles…etc). If you submit a Adobe InDesign or QuarkExpress file to us for translation, we make sure that the layout (text, graphics, overall design) of the translated version matches the original format as closely as possible.

What software do you use?

We latest versions of industry standard software available for Windows XP/Vista and Mac OSX. These include Adobe CS, (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Framemaker…), QuarkXPress Passport and MS Publisher. We also use a large number of custom applications, and also love Linux/UNIX and various other open-source software.

What types of files do you accept?

We accept any and all file formats: Microsoft file formats (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, OneNote, Access etc.), Adobe (e.g. InDesign, PageMaker, PhotoShop, Premiere, Illustrator, FrameMaker, PDF etc.), Macromedia (e.g. Flash, Homesite, Dreamweaver etc.), Corel (e.g. Draw, PhotoPaint, WordPerfect, Corel Ventura etc.), Web-based files (e.g. html, xml, flash, php, asp etc.)etc… You can always ask us about a file format you are not familiar with, file conversion rates may apply. We can also help you escape proprietary/closed file formats, just ask!

What is a source file?

Source files are the original files containing all components of a specific media (text, graphics, logos, etc…). This also includes translations.

Can you work with me even if I don’t have any source files?

If you do not have the source files it will be our pleasure to produce them for you according to your needs.

So, you can provide me with an exact translated copy of my original media?

YES! However, do anticipate some very small differences due to text expansion in some languages and depending on the type of media you are translating.

Can you handle fonts traditionally referred to as ‘double-byte’, like Hebrew or Japanese?

Yes, we can handle all Unicode fonts.

Are there any tips to consider before writing source text or designing a layout?

There are a few things you can do to prepare your media for translation. First of all, try to leave as much white space as possible. English text usually expands when it is translated into other languages, which varies according to language, but is usually at least 25%. So, it’s always good to leave plenty of white space to accommodate for this expansion. Also, try to avoid hyphenated text. Regarding your source text, make sure you are always writing for an international audience (no slang, cultural references…etc), while taking into consideration date, time, number and measurement formats. Also, make sure your CMS has multilingual support.
